Through Their Eyes

When I worked at the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) I was part of an amazing project called TESFA, which means hope in Amharic. TESFA sought to empower young married girls on the Amhara Region of Ethiopia with health and economy education, yet it proved to provide so much more. The final report can be found here: https://www.icrw.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/140406_ICRW_ChildMarriage_RptRev_pages4_lo.pdf

Below are a selection of photographs. The first set were taken during a community meeting among an eucalyptus grove in 2010. The second set highlights the photovoice project I created. I wanted the participants, these beautiful young married girls, to be able to tell their story. These are my images of the process. Their beautiful images can be found at http://www.care.org/sites/default/files/documents/Photo_voice_final3.pdf

  • Friends

    Friends

Young married girls often are pulled out of school to get married, depriving them of an education and meaningful work. Many also face health risks associated with early sexual activity and childbearing. Program participants will learn important life skills and, as leaders of girls groups in their communities, share what they learn with others. Outside Debre Tabor, November 2010

  • Community Leaders

    Community Leaders

As part of the program, community volunteers were elected by their peers to participate in the program. One of the most successful aspects of the program is how it engages a diverse group of people, including women, men, religious leaders, community leaders and teachers. Each group works with project staff and a local health worker. Outside Debre Tabor, November 2010
