The Lives of Women and Girls

I have dedicated my life to working with women and girls. A long time ago I realized that it was by the accident of my birth, that I was born into a world where my education was expected and doors were opened to me along the way. I seek a world where all women have the same opportunities I did. The opportunity to go to school, to feel safe in their home and community, to have access to health care, to choose who and when they marry, to decide who they want to be and are able to advocate for the world they want to live in. I seek to empower their voices.

I see beauty and strength in each of these women that I have been blessed to meet. I hope you do too.

If I were to choose my favorite photograph, this would be it. To me it describes perfectly the world I want for all girls. To walk with grace and strength, indifferent to the world. The Amhara Region of Ethiopia has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world. A young girl walks along the street in Debre Tabor, located in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia.

Aunt Jackie, she is Maria's Aunt. She was so proud of her rooster. There was something about her strength and her glow that reminded me of you. She was always working, running around doing something for her farm. I think you would like her.
